Turkish Rose: The Botanical Heart of Amisi

Few flowers carry as much history, symbolism, and skin-renewing power as the rose. Rosa damascena has been revered across cultures for centuries, not only for its beauty but for its ability to calm, comfort, and restore.

At Amisi, Turkish Rose is a signature ingredient — chosen not just for its benefits to the skin, but for the sense of softness and stillness it evokes. Turkish Rose Hydrating Serum was formulated to honour this duality, capturing both the botanical potency and the quiet ritual the rose has long represented

Rosa Damascena Skincare Benefits

Rose Damascena — also known as Turkish Rose or Damask Rose — is one of skincare’s most beloved ingredients, and for good reason. When rose hydrosols for the face are used in place of plain water, they offer more than hydration.

When rose hydrosols for the face are used in place of plain water, they offer more than hydration. Turkish Rose hydrosol delivers instant moisture and soothing relief to the skin, thanks to the natural constituents present in the flower. It brings a gentle, calming effect that enhances both the performance and purpose of the formulation, making it a beautiful base for nurturing rituals.

Key Benefits of Turkish Rose for the Skin

Hydration & Plumping

Turkish Rose hydrosol and oil are rich in natural humectants that help bind moisture to the skin. When paired with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, they enhance the skin’s ability to retain water and smooth the appearance of fine lines.

Age-supportive Properties

Rose is naturally rich in antioxidants — including vitamins C and E — which help combat free radical damage and support collagen production. It also reduces inflammation and supports elasticity, making it ideal for dry, mature, or stressed skin.

Soothing & Balancing

Turkish Rose is ideal for sensitive or reactive skin. It calms irritation, reduces redness, and strengthens the skin barrier. It’s often used in formulations and calming serums for sensitive skin designed to support rosacea, dryness, or post-treatment recovery.

A Flower of the Heart

Renowned for its affinity with the heart in herbal and aromatherapy traditions, Turkish Rose carries a deeply symbolic and energetic resonance. Long regarded as a botanical that evokes softness and emotional balance, rose has become synonymous with the invitation to return to one's centre.

The Turkish Rose Hydrating Serum was created to honour this legacy, not only as a nourishing topical ritual but as an aromatic experience designed to soothe the senses and evoke self-compassion. Its delicate, naturally derived scent is more than fragrant; it is a quiet companion in moments of overwhelm, offering a pause for tenderness.

Though the science of vibrational healing is still emerging, rose oil has long been celebrated in holistic circles for its high-frequency energy—an attribute tied to its ability to energetically support emotional release and heart-opening. In this way, the natural rose serum serves a dual purpose: it replenishes the skin while gently creating space for tenderness and self-connection.

A Legacy of Botanical Skincare Rituals

Rose has long been part of Eastern beauty and self-care traditions. In ancient Persia and across the Ottoman Empire, rose water was a daily ritual — used to cleanse the face, refresh the spirit, and scent the skin. In Turkish hammams (traditional bathhouses), rose water was poured over the body to soothe and elevate the mood.

In Ayurvedic practices, rose is considered cooling and pitta-balancing — ideal for calming inflamed skin and restoring emotional equilibrium. Across South Asia and the Middle East, rose-infused oils and waters have been used in bridal rituals and ceremonies, where the flower symbolises purity, devotion, and beauty.

Formulations with rose deeply connect to these traditions, crafting skincare that honours the rituals of women before us.

The Many Forms of Rose in Skincare

Rosa damascena is incredibly versatile. Its benefits vary depending on how the flower is processed:

  • Rose Hydrosol (Floral Water): A delicate water that remains after essential oil distillation. It’s gentle, soothing, and instantly hydrating.

  • Rose Otto (Essential Oil): Steam-distilled from thousands of petals. It calms skin, reduces redness, and supports emotional balance. Due to its potency, it's always diluted in a carrier oil or cream.

  • Rose Extracts: Used in creams and masks to strengthen the skin barrier, reduce irritation, and protect against environmental stress.

Each form allows me to create rituals that are both grounding and transformative, not just for the skin, but for the whole being.

The Journey of Turkish Rose

The beautiful thing about botanical ingredients steeped in apothecary tradition is the stories they carry, and Rosa damascena is no exception.

One of the most charming tales comes from the late 1800s, when Muftuzade Gulcu Ismail Efendi, an Ottoman subject living in Bulgaria’s Kazanlak Rose Valley, dreamed of bringing the Damask rose to his ancestral home in Isparta, Türkiye. He cleverly hid the cuttings inside his walking cane for the journey.

Once planted in Isparta, the roses thrived in the region’s climate. Today, Isparta is Türkiye’s “City of Roses,” producing some of the world’s most prized rose oil — a story that reflects the reverence and resilience of this incredible flower.
