Origin: Occurs naturally in the Babchi (Psoralea Corylifolia) or Otholobium plants which are flowering plants in the legume family (Fabaceae).

Process: Psoralea Corylifolia seeds are pulverised before extracting them with ethanol, the resulting extract is filtered and purified using physical methods that isolate the Bakuchiol out so it can be concentrated.

Bearberry extract, sourced from the leaves of the bearberry shrub, contains plant enzymes and antioxidants to promote an even skin tone and more radiant appearance.

Cacay is a remarkable botanical oil pressed from the seeds of the Caryodendron orinocense tree, native to the Amazon region of South America. At Amisi, we choose Cacay from sustainably managed sources, where the trees are grown and harvested for their valuable seeds without destructive rainforest clearing.

One of the most interesting qualities of Cacay is its naturally occurring Vitamin A, including retinol. This has made the oil particularly interesting in skincare for ageing and changing skin. Unlike a conventional retinol treatment, Cacay provides Vitamin A as part of the oil's naturally occurring composition, together with essential fatty acids and other beneficial plant compounds.

Cacay is also exceptionally rich in linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid important to the skin's lipid barrier. Research has found high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids together with naturally occurring Vitamin E tocopherols, while other analyses have identified phytosterols and antioxidant compounds. These help explain Cacay's excellent emollient and skin-conditioning qualities.

Despite its nutrient-rich composition, Cacay is a relatively light oil that absorbs beautifully into the skin, providing nourishment without an overly heavy finish.

We chose Cacay for our Saffron Rejuvenating Oil because it brings together the qualities we look for in a botanical facial oil — essential fatty acids, naturally occurring Vitamin A and antioxidants. We combine it with bakuchiol, a plant-derived retinol alternative, saffron and complementary botanical oils to support smoother, softer and more radiant-looking skin as it changes with age.

Cocoa butter, derived from the beans of the Theobroma cacao, is a deeply nourishing emollient that offers exceptional benefits for facial skin, particularly mature complexions. Rosa rubiginosa is a lightweight, nourishing rosehip seed oil particularly rich in essential fatty acids, including linoleic and linolenic acids. These fatty acids play an important role in supporting the skin barrier, helping reduce moisture loss and keeping skin feeling soft, supple and comfortable.

Often described as a “dry” oil because of its light, non-greasy skin feel, Rosa rubiginosa is also valued for naturally occurring vitamin A-related compounds and antioxidants associated with skin renewal and a healthy, radiant-looking complexion. Rosehip oils have also been studied for their potential role in the appearance of scars, uneven tone and photoaged skin, although more research is still needed.

Jojoba is quite different from most botanical oils. Technically a liquid wax, it is composed predominantly of long-chain wax esters rather than triglycerides. Wax esters are also naturally present in our skin's surface lipids, which is one reason jojoba is so valued in skincare.

Lightweight and non-greasy, jojoba helps condition the skin and support its protective barrier, helping to limit moisture loss without feeling overly heavy. Its unique composition makes it suitable for a wide range of skin types, including dry, sensitive and oilier skin.

Jojoba has also demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in research. More recent laboratory research using human skin tissue found that topical jojoba reduced inflammatory markers and increased the synthesis of collagen III and hyaluronic acid, suggesting interesting potential for supporting healthy, ageing skin.

Research into Viola extracts has explored their influence on mechanisms involved in epidermal hydration, including aquaporin-3 — a protein involved in transporting water through the skin — and pathways associated with the skin's own hyaluronic acid. This makes Wild Pansy an interesting companion to hyaluronic acid in a hydrating formulation.
